Privacy is the key issue here; personally identifiable user information is not shared (except with the user and with the people the user allows), but everything else will be. I do believe that is the world we are moving to.
Also, the ideas in this post are so similar to Kevin Kelly's views as presented in his book New Rules for the New Economy. I've mentioned that book before, but it truly is an astounding book that I feel is a must-read for Internet business people. -- KM

Let's start with a definition. A service is open when anyone can take anything (code, data, etc) from that service and do anything they want with it, without permission from anyone. You might argue that is an extreme definition.
