Recap of "The Internet is Dead and Boring" Meme
Mark Cuban says the Internet is dead and boring. It touched a nerve with a lot of people.
On the tech side, the Internet is dead and boring. Alex Iskold accurately described it as a digestion phase. Because I am a cheapskate who thinks about everything in terms of cheapness, I call it a commoditization phase: it's when technology gets commoditized, and value shifts to services built atop that commoditized technology. Commoditization often goes hand in hand with consolidation (which we are seeing), and is a prelude to disruption. Disruption is always exciting. Think of it this way: web 2.0 was about applications that enabled social interactions online (blogs, wikis, social networks). The next phase is in value shifting to services built atop human intelligence. Mahalo and Publish2 are two services that exploit this. The real revolution, though, will be in figuring out how open licensing can be used to incentivize creative contributions. In my opinion, that's the ticket to the big disruption. And that's what will make the Internet exciting again. Anyway. While the blogosphere remains too afraid to talk about 9/11 Truth, they did gobble up Cuban's post.
