Act II
To be honest, folks, I've been feeling a bit miserable of late. Having spent the first 21 years of my life in a really, really depressed state, this is a feeling I'm quite accustomed to. I also think I'm adept at snapping myself out of it and not letting it get me down. As an entrepreneur, if I let depression entrap me....it's over. Can't let it happen, not an option.
The good thing about depression is that it can provide great inspiration (just ask the emo and goth losers). And so, I figure I'll use this recent bout of depression I've been struggling with to get some progress done on my rock opera (see previous discussion). An update on where we stand: I've written the lyrics for the first act, and have written the music for one of the songs. One of the songs is a Kid Mercury hip-hop song. I wanted to stay away from hip-hop, mainly because I view it largely as a novelty endeavor (i.e. "an Indian guy with an acoustic guitar rapping about conspiracy and economics??!?!? wtf?!!?" lol) but I think its appropriate for the last song in Act I. For each of the three acts, I decided to create a playlist to help me get inspiration and get in the mood. Act II needs to communicate the battle; the struggle between liberty and tyranny. Remember we are following classic three act structure here, with the first act introducing the problem and the final act providing us with the resolution to the conflict illustrated in Act II. So here is the playlist I've been listening to this past week to get ideas for Act II: Run This Town by Jay-Z featuring Rihanna and Kanye West Sing for the Moment by Eminem Fighter by Christina Aguilera No Man's Woman by Sinead O'Connor Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw Stronger by Kanye West What Would You Do? by Paris Like a Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan Hurricane by Bob Dylan Refugee by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers A song I wrote last year, Outsider, is one I think is appropriate for Act II. So that leaves two more songs. One issue I've had is that I wrote Act I in third person, but I think Act II will be in first person. I think Act III will be in second person. Originally I intended for everything to be in third person, but I think it will work better this way, at least for me. |
