A Review of Right Side Capital's New Investment Fund
Right Side Capital is a private equity investment fund, meaning they invest in privately held companies. RSC particularly focuses on really small startups.
Their new fund has a strategy investing in approximately 100-200 companies per year in the information niche. This is significantly more than the number of investment similar funds make. To accomodate this, RSC will have a fairly standardized approach, and will rely more on creating resources and a community than in offering lots of direct consultation. In sum, I love everything they are doing. There is just one mistake. RSC's HUGE mistake is not having a blog/social media presence on their site. Remember what the great Internet prophet Kevin Kelly told us: community before commerce. They should have blogs and a news community BEFORE they launch their store selling US dollars in exchange for startup equity. This is going to mess up their ability to find the right opportunities for them, and is also going to hinder their ability to connect their portfolio companies, which is going to be the real way they add value and make a lot of money. Unfortunately I view this mistake as a MASSIVE mistake, and as such, a dealbreaker if not corrected. Of course, perhaps I am wrong -- I am simply offering my opinion. In any event I commend RSC for taking a bold step in the right direction. |
