On June 4th, Liam Gallagher launches his own fashion line,
Pretty Green.
Here's how this relates to the future of music:
1. Liam is only selling clothes that he himself would wear. Instead of monetizing music, Gallagher is monetizing influence. Return on influence.
2. Part of the promotional efforts for Pretty Green included the release of a new song "Man of Misery" (here's
a news story about it). Here we see music being used as a marketing tool; an ad, basically. And you always want your ads to go far and wide, and for people to embrace them and spread them as well. A completely different mentality than when you think of music as a product you are selling as a core revenue stream. Instead, Liam is going to be thinking about how much revenue he is generating from clothing, how much of that is attributable to song marketing, what did it cost to make and promote the song, etc.
3. Liam is using social media to promote this new fashion line. He's got a Twitter page, and he's also got
a blog/community on the Pretty Green site. If done properly, this can be a huge revenue generator. If Liam were to interact more with people on his own site, people would go there, because they want to hang out with Liam. Once they are there hanging out, making the sale happen inevitably over time.
I expect these trends to continue and accelerate. It's
the future of music!
The song for the post is my all time favorite song written by Liam Gallagher, "I'm Outta Time." In the not too distant future, a great song like "I'm Outta Time" will be the most powerful marketing weapon an ecommerce store could ask for.
