Oh F*ck, I Might Have Vitiligo

Below is a picture of my shin.

If you look closely, you'll notice there is a white spot slightly below the direct center of the picture. This is a small part of my shin where the skin appears to have lots its pigmentation.

Loss of pigmentation in the skin is a symptom of vitiligo. If you've seen people with blotchy skin, they have vitiligo.

Now, before you stop reading this blog because you don't want to be associated with an ugly freak who has vitiligo, let me say that one tiny area where there is a loss of pigmentation does not make a vitiligo case. And while this can spread, it will likely take years. So don't worry, you can at least read this blog for a few more years.

The even better news is that thanks to the Internet, I was able to quickly do some research on vitiligo to find out more. Here's what I learned:

1. Taking ginko biloba can slow the spread of vitiligo (went out and bought some today, have already started taking it)
2. The environment can be a significant cause. Definitely, if I do have vitiligo, I think moving to Miami was a contributing factor
3. There are a bunch of vitamins and natural cures for vitiligo
4. Loss of hair color is also a sign of vitiligo (while my hair is still predominantly black, I have gotten a lot more gray hairs this past year since moving to Miami Beach)

So, after a brief panic attack and feelings of hating the world due to the thought of having vitiligo, I'm no longer too concerned. First, if it happens it happens, that would suck big time but there are greater tragedies in the world and I'm sure I could survive and cope and even be happy. These days it generally takes a lot to break my spirit, so I'll get by. Hopefully, though, the condition will not spread. In terms of prevention, the biggest change I'll make is to make a more conscious effort of avoiding being out in the sun during peak hours and modifying my diet accordingly (ginko biloba is the first step, but there are some other vitamins and herbal teas I can take). If after doing more research I come to find that I am at risk for the condition getting worse, I would look into moving to a new location.

This type of research and do-it-yourself approach to healthcare is going to become increasingly popular, in my opinion, as it becomes obvious the medical industry is a complete joke and as drugs become too expensive for many people (nevermind they don't work to begin with).

Of course, if you know anything about vitiligo, please feel free to let me know. It would be much appreciated!

There are three songs for this post, all of which are entitled "Beautiful" -- a feeling folks with vitiligo desperately need to find a way to feel. The first one is by Carole King, and is my favorite of the three.

Next is Christina Aguilera's song, written by Linda Perry, a top songwriter.

Lastly is the Eminem song, off his new album. I really like it, though I wish rappers who can't sing and know they can't sing, uh, refrain from singing. Just find someone else to do it! It will make the song sound a million times better. But this is still a good song, even if we have to put up with Eminem trying to sing when he can't.

Unhappy Vitiligo

Hello, I am a girl in middle school and I have vitiligo. It is very hard for me to wear shorts or participate in sports because of uniform. My vitiligo is on my shin and it is hard to hide in the summer time when i can't wear jeans anymore. Recently I've ordered this new product (I dont know if it will work but all the others I've tried haven't) here is the link: Vitiligo, Vitiligo Treatment, Vitiligo cure, Skin white patches : Anti-Vitiligo I hope this helps......

You aren't alone, hopefully I'm not :/

vitiligo

my son was diagnosed with vitiligo about 5 yrs ago. we went through the different steroidal creams for the first 2 yrs, as it continued to spread. I really thought it would just clear up so i wasn't too concerned. After it didn't i began to throughly research alternative treatments. I read about a study in India where they used ground up chickpeas applied to the affected area with success and i read about pepperine triggering re-pigmentation. so we stopped the steroidal creams and began to apply ground up chickpeas and a little pepper with oil nightly. To our amazement the area began to re-pigment but then additional spots began to appear . we applied the mixture as well which seem to slow down the process but not stop it. I found info about using neem oil , so we did that, which worked at first but again new spots began to appear. then when watching a movie "Food Matters" i learned that mercury has been linked to several auto-immune disorders. Then it came to me ,the same year the vitiligo showed up my son received his first mercury filling!! So in May 2010 we had the filling replaced with composite and began a heavy metal detox program. we have not used anymore creams or oils and the spots seem to be clearing up. He is still undergoing detox but the last spot is now pink and seems to be going away. I found your website by searching for mercury and vitiligo just thought this could be of some help to you.
