Awards Showcase

A Review of My YouTube Advertising Efforts (04/09)

I've been advertising my songs about musicians for the past six months. Here's a recap:

  • The average clickthru rate was 0.1%. That means that for every 1,000 times the ad was shown (i.e. every 1,000 times the name of the musician was searched for), one person clicked on it and watched some or all of the video.
  • I was hoping that video advertising would lead to one of these videos going viral. Unfortunately, this never happened. Predicting what type of content will go viral is always a tough game, but I like the advertising content I think can go viral, and will continue to do that.

I've turned off my advertising campaign for all the musicians I was advertising for, and will now advertise my liberty songs. Currently, I'm only advertising "Proud to be a Conspiracy Theorist" and "Yes We Can" (anti-Obama song). I'm contemplating making "Proud to be a Conspiracy Theorist" our new national anthem, a move away from our current national anthem, "You're a Spiritual Being With a Destiny." Eventually we'll have a community poll to decide. You'll even be able to buy votes using MercBucks, our virtual currency!

Anyway. I'm becoming more bearish on YouTube advertising. Google owns them so they will be okay, but I think YouTube will end up being a cost center rather than a profit center, which I think will surprise many people.
