The End of Nationalism
As we've discussed many times, most succinctly in our report on Culture 2.0, we are in the midst of a major consciousness shift. There will be many implications of this consciousness shift. One of the most important ones will be the end of nationalism.
In psychological terms, what will bring about the end of nationalism will be the shift away from mass consciousness, in which one sacrifices his/her individual identity to assimilate into the collective, and a shift towards group consciousness -- in which the value of the group is enhanced by the uniqueness of the members. Command and control militaries are an example of mass consciousness; social networks are an example of group consciousness. When the shift is complete, generations of the future will look back on those who believed in nationalism as being dumb -- much like how we view those who accept overt rulership by a king (although realistically speaking, the USA is closer to a monarchy than a constitutional republic; the key, though, is that this is not public perception. At least not yet). Specifically, I would expect the generation born after 9/11 to not really relate to the idea of nationalism, and to more instinctively understand liberty and the idea that the ecosystem they choose should serve their individual needs and mirror their viewpoints. |
