Here's Some Military Propaganda from Three Doors Down and Spin Magazine
I bought a copy of Spin magazine recently. I rarely buy terrible magazines like Spin, but I needed something to read during my Thanksgiving dinner at a Thai restaurant, and I read elsewhere that there was an interview with Noel Gallagher in Spin, so I figured I might as well.
Turns out the interview with Noel was in a different issue. But I did find this:
And:
The military propaganda has really been escalating of late. Why?
The band featured in the ad, Three Doors Down, is probably well-intentioned. They probably believe what they are saying about how the military protects our freedom. The painful irony, of course, is that what the military does is closer to the opposite.
But this is the type of crap that plagues all media, the music industry in particular. To get a mainstream media platform, you have to go along with the war party line, or at least agree to keep mum about it, and talk about something innocuous instead. If you don't know the Truth, and if you genuinely believe the war stuff, than this isn't too much of a problem. Even for those who know the Truth, the material rewards for silence are too great and the penalties for speaking out are too stiff to incentivize doing anything about it. The Telecommunications Act of 1996, one of the worst pieces of legislation ever (and that's saying a lot), enabled the media consolidation that allows the ridiculous amount of censorship and propaganda now blasted at us via the mainstream media.
The good news, though, is that this entire system is collapsing, and what awaits afterwards -- provided we are vigilant and diligent enough to make it happen -- is media distribution via the Internet: the creator (i.e. musician, writer, photographer, videographer, etc) can now distribute directly to and interact directly with the fans. The creator, in fact, will become the new distributor; creators will have their own niche community, which they can use to broadcast media they like.
This will change the world.
But, as our current system collapses, we need to make sure we keep our eye on the ball, and know that this is what we want; if not, the existing power structure will stifle the Internet and destroy all of its glorious potential, just as they do with everything else. War and destruction are their hobbies -- the games they play.
Time to put an end to their games.
(Apologies again for the late post today, I slept in given that it was a holiday.)
