If You're Losing Your Memory, Thank Diet Soda

I always see people drinking diet soda, and it just breaks my heart.

Diet soda contains aspartame. Aspartame is one of the worst things you can put in your body. It's up there with cigarettes, perhaps even worse -- especially when one considers that everyone knows smoking is bad for your health and is taboo in many circles, while diet soda is thought to be innocuous and thus is free of any cultural stigma.

For more on aspartame, check out our archive on this subject.

Here's a quick summary of some key facts about aspartame. If you're looking for citations, search the web, as well as our aspartame archive.
  • It causes memory loss. If you drink a lot of diet soda and are having trouble remembering things, chances are you're suffering from aspartame poisoning. Onset of alzheimer's at a young age (like in one's '30s) is often caused by excess consumption of aspartame. While there are plenty of horrors of aspartame, memory loss is what I personally am most concerned about when I think of diet soda drinkers.
  • Here is a great timeline of the development and introduction of aspartame. Key facts:
  • Aspartame was discovered in 1965
  • G.D. Searle, the company that owns the patent to aspartame, lobbies the FDA to get it approved, starting in 1970.
  • The FDA rejects it, concluding that it causes brain tumors.
  • In 1977, G.D. Searle hires then former Congressman Donald Rumsfeld, to help get aspartame approved.
  • Efforts remain unsuccessful; aspartame continues to be rejected by the FDA. Then, in 1981, newly appointed FDA commission Arthur Hayes Hull, Jr., who had been supported and endorsed by Donald Rumsfeld, appoints a special panel to re-investigate aspartame. Aspartame is then approved for use in dry products.
  • In 1982, G.D. Searle files a petition to allow aspartame to be used in carbonated beverages. This petition was successful for G.D. Searle and aspartame was authorized.
  • In 1983, the National Soft Drink Association (NSDA) drafts an objection to the final ruling which permits the use of aspartame in carbonated beverages and syrup. NSDA says that Searle has not provided responsible certainty that aspartame and its' degradation products are safe for use in soft drinks.
  • The NSDA eventually loses its objection, and aspartame begins to be used in soft drinks in 1985.
Fear Not, Here Are Your Solutions

At this point you're probably thinking, "But Kid Mercury, I've been deceived by television to feel inadequate and unattractive, and I have a crappy diet because of all the polluted food sold in the grocery stores, so television is probably right on this one. If I don't have diet soda to keep me skinny, what can I do?"

Don't worry, friends. As always, I'm not just a bearer of bad news.

I'm here to deliver the truth that sets you free.

So how about some green tea, which actually burns more calories than it takes in. And how about organic food. Though the latter is significantly pricier. I spend a lot of money on food.

But it's worth it.

If the bad news has got you down, here's one of my favorite "cheer you up" type songs: "Stay Young," by Oasis. I took that song, switched up the rhythm and chords a bit, made it acoustic, slapped on a new set of lyrics, and made it "Don't Let the Haters Get You Down" -- which is featured on Love & Truth, available for free and in online stores everywhere!
