Don't Look Back in Anger and the Future of Free Music
You gotta check this. It's Oasis performing "Don't Look Back in Anger" with The Crouch End Festival Chorus (a choir) just a couple weeks ago on BBC. If you're listening on a laptop, consider plugging in your earbuds -- the choir here is awesome, and you'll want to give them a direct connection to your mind.
F'ing unbelievable. I define good pop music as music that sounds good when a stadium full of people sing along. And based on that definition, I don't think there's a better pop song than "Don't Look Back in Anger." This is clearly part of what's so great about the Internet; every performance gets archived and distributed, people record their own versions, bands make covers, etc. Of course, the key for publishing online, in the world where media is free, is community. All the relevant media needs to be aggregated and organized in a single destination, and then used to create an online community. Members of the community are then sold stuff. That is the story of how profitability and free music go hand in hand. So when you look around at how crappy the music industry is, when you see how censorship, propaganda, bad music, and broken business models there are, find solace in knowing that the future is bright. Noel was right all along: there's no need to look back in anger. |
