There are those who think military escalation is a setup for a return to a military draft. While the American people can generally be conned into believing anything and don't care about anything aside from entertainment (i.e. sports, celebrity gossip, etc), I think a draft would really wake people up, because that would affect them personally. Anyway, the US imperial strategy is clearly to use its invasions as a stepping stone to invade more areas, which may also be a part of the rationale behind the troop surge in Afghanistan noted in the link below. -- KM


The Pentagon will be sending 12,000 to 15,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan, possibly as soon as the end of this year, with planning underway for a further force buildup in 2009.
