The post below is about Google forking over your personal data whenever they want to. Just like getting locked into a political/economic ecosystem (European Union, the forthcoming North American Union, etc) sucks big time, so too does getting locked into an online ecosystem like Google. In fact, the online ecosystem is becoming more important than the one in the "real" world, and so the same issues of fairness and governance will crop up.
The key to real freedom on the web is data portability. Here is one data portability project; I don't think what they have in mind is going to work, but it's the right idea. -- KM
