The niche-ification of social networks is the first step towards the niche-ification of virtual worlds. The niche-ification of virtual worlds will result in a world where there are more virtual worlds, and thus virtual governments, than there are real people. This means governments are no longer a scarcity; people are. Governments have to compete for people.
In my opinion, this is a key step in the evolution of humanity, and the consciousness leap the Mayan calendar predicts will happen after 2012. One key issue is can virtual governments actually replace "real world" governments? I believe they can and will. But first, the nation-state must collapse, which we are already seeing.
