The collapse of our society is going to be a very painful thing. But of course, there is a bright side -- namely that many of the institutions that suck so much are going to be destroyed, thus allowing something much better to be built.
For instance, I'm really excited about
the collapse of education.
If you think the public school system is actually trying to educate people, please check out

Education 2.0: Self-Education, Internet-Based
The future of education is Internet-based, self-education.
I am largely biased here, as the mission statement of the organization I am working on,
ActoNetwork, is to help people learn. The mission statement stems from my personal experience; pretty much all of what I know that is worth knowing -- astrology, songwriting, business strategy, information architecture, web design, Internet marketing -- comes from reading and asking questions online, and trying things out on my own. In my experience, the most valuable thing that forums/social networks/online communities can provide is an effective atmosphere for learning.
ActoGuitar, a site I created that republishes and reorganizes YouTube to help people learn to play guitar, is the kind of site I think will be immensely useful in helping people learn. Sites that organize/coordinate the best educational content and the best educators will, in my opinion, create the best learning experience for all.
