Book Review: The Christ Conspiracy

Book Review: The Christ Conspiracy

I just finished reading the highly controversial book The Christ Conspiracy: The Greatest Story Ever Sold by Acharya S (her pen name). The book essentially argues that Jesus Christ never existed; that Christianity, like virtually all organized religions, is essentially a form of mass-mind control; and that Christianity is thus "the greatest story ever sold."

Before I get into my assessment of the book, it may be useful for you to know a bit about me, so that you can evaluate my opinion in light of your opinion of my background.

I am familiar with the Bible, and think it is a good book -- interesting stories, profound messages, and, at times, eerily symbolic, in my opinion. My familiarity with the Bible stems from my pre-college education; I went to Catholic school for 12 years -- all of my grade school and high school education. While I don't recommend anyone go to Catholic school, ever, under any circumstances (and especially not for 12 years), one good thing about it is that it does provide you with an education in the Bible, which is something I found to be worthwhile.

With that said, I am not a Christian, never have been, and, unless they start giving tax breaks for Christians, never will be. My spiritual cup of tea, for lack of a better word, is astrology. I started studying astrology in 1999, during my second year of undergraduate college. I am passionate about astrology; it has helped me immensely in my life, more than I can possibly convey. The world would be such a better place if people knew astrology (sun sign horoscopes are NOT an accurate reflection of the power of astrology, in case you were wondering). But hey, people won't even believe that 9/11 was an inside job when that can pretty much be factually proven (go watch Loose Change Final Cut and visit Patriots Question 9/11 - Responsible Criticism of the 9/11 Commission Report if you're still believing the whole bin-laden-from-the-cave explanation for 9/11), so I'm not holding my breath on people waking up to the astrological reality of our universe any time soon.

So, now that you know a bit about me, let me tell you about The Christ Conspiracy, and what I thought of it.

The book argues that the Bible is an astrotheological text; essentially, that the story of Jesus is an astrological allegory that tells the story of the Sun going through the 12 signs of the zodiac (symbolized by Jesus, the Son of God, and his relationship the 12 apostles, each of whom is symbolic of a particular sign in the zodiac). The author goes to great lengths to back this assertion up, citing ancient texts, Biblical scholars, the Bible itself, and other contemporary scholars.

Acharya S' explanation is very detailed and thorough, and as an astrologer, I find it to make perfect sense. I know that is hard to believe for many people, and while I liked the book quite a bit, it is probably too dense and boring for a lot of people. If you are interested in investigating this topic yourself, I highly recommend starting with the movie Zeitgeist, a hot Internet movie that you can watch for free on Google Video. In my opinion that's the best movie that came out in 2007, by a wide margin.

The Christ Conspiracy also notes that there are other mythological characters that came before Christ that have the same story: born of a virgin on December 25, referred to by gestural names as the "Truth" and the "Light," had 12 disciples, began his ministry at age 30, was crucified, buried for three days, and then resurrected and ascended into Heaven. Before Jesus, this was the story of Horus, Mithras, Dionysus, and many other mythological characters. Acharya S' other book, Suns of God, goes into greater detail of how other religions are essentially telling the same story, and are based on the same astrotheological concepts.

My only gripe with the book is that it does not make much of an attempt to appreciate why the Bible is without question the most influential book in the history of the world; the only explanation offered is that it was essentially forced upon the people. While this is largely true, I don't think is it the only reason; after all, many people involved in the Freedom/Truth Movement, a movement that is essentially a response to tyranny, are Bible-believing Christians. Many of those people will tell you that the Bible and their relationship with Jesus (however fictional or truthful that may be) is what gives them the courage and strength to do the right thing and stand for justice and 9/11 Truth. Addressing this issue would have made the book more diplomatic and compassionate, and thus a better tool in spreading the Truth that will shatter the matrix of lies we live in.

Overall, I highly recommend the book.
