What Type of Company Can Build a Commons for the Internet?
What is the public property of the Internet?
I'm not sure there is one. But when I ask the question, one thing does come to mind: Wikipedia. There is an opportunity to create something else here -- something that caters to different governance values, something that promises a different style of content (more video!), and something that is more profit-friendly. That is certainly one of the things I want to try with the ActoNetwork; to create a massive knowledge base of truth that is a public commons, similar to Wikipedia. This is what Operation ActoLearn is really about. The creation of a public commons is also necessary for a certain type of business -- namely businesses that leverage external assets to succeed. Innovations in leveraging external assets are what bring some of the greatest cost-savings to Internet and technology firms, and so I think we'll see more and more companies try such strategies over the next few years. On that note, here is the recently re-launched version of ActoGuitar. It's a public property created by remixing user-generated content. By the people, for the people! |
