Ecosystems in Web 2.0 and the Assassination of JFK

Thus far in this mini-series, we've seen how the CIA used the edge to assassinate John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States. When we study the assassination and how it was executed, one thing should be clear: it pays to invest in the right relationships.

As we've noted, the CIA, had established relationships with the mafia, the military-industrial complex, and the media; these relationships were crucial to both the execution and coverup of the assassination. Without these relationships, the operation would have been much harder to pull off, and may not have been able to been pulled off at all (especially if there were not media complicity).

Likewise, the companies that will succeed in web 2.0 will be the ones that invest in learning and leveraging the right ecosystems.

Let's consider a practical example: YouTube. Right now, many sites are embedding videos from YouTube; some sites are little more than an aggregation of YouTube videos. Is this a wise move? What if YouTube gets shut down? What if videos start getting deleted from YouTube?

In web 2.0, investing in the right ecosystems is crucial to minimizing operating costs while maximizing capabilities and profit opportunities. What ecosystems are worth investing in depends largely on what type of business you're in. Here are my favorite ecosystems for publishing sites on the web:

As the web becomes more and more fragmented, we'll see more and more ecosystems emerge, and key decisions will center around which ecosystems should be invested in. If you wish to accomplish your objectives, understanding what ecosystems to invest in will be imperative. How the CIA participated in taking care of the asssassination and the coverup of President John F. Kennedy are prime examples of this.

The key issue relates to how exactly the economics of that will work; i.e. how the pie is created, how it will be divided, and what the end product will look like for the consumer.
