Last week, 33 people were killed in
the Virginia Tech murders. The official story is the oft-heard refrain of a "lone nut" who killed all these people (including himself).
This story is suspicious for a number of reasons. If you are not familiar with alternative explanations, you can familiarize yourself by checking out the following:

Blacksburg Massacre according to Webster Tarpley
The basic alternative theory is that the assassin was a mind-controlled CIA assassin -- a real-life manchurian candidate. Manchurian candidates were created under the CIA
MKULTRA program. The movie
Manchurian Candidate is recommended to get the basic idea. Speculations of historical precedents include the assassinations of
Robert F. Kennedy and
John Lennon, and the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan.
The alternative theory provides web marketers with a practical example of a
problem-reaction-solution scenario designed specifically to manufacture consent -- to sell an idea. The problem was artificially created (mind control assassin who terrorizes a community of young adults) so as to create a public reaction (how can we stop this from happening?) so that a pre-fabricated solution can be delivered (restrict liberties). Sure enough,
a push for gun control and the overthrow of
Constitutionally protected liberties followed. Will it work?
Mockingbird Marketing Gone Wrong
While MKULTRA may have helped to create the problem, it was the job of
the mockingbird media to create the public reaction needed so that the ruling class could deliver the solution that advances their agenda (undermining the US Constitution so that
power can more easily be transferred to supranational governmental entities). Media coverage was filled with sensationalism. The image below illustrates.
The media has two objectives here: (1) induce fear, thus helping to manufacture consent for the pre-fabricated solution that is to be delivered; and (2) glorify the assassin, so that
copycats would follow, thus creating a more justified need for the solution sought to be delivered.
The Internet vs. The Ruling Class
The problem the ruling class runs into with the Internet is that the mockingbirds that need to be influenced online are not FOX news, CNN, MSNBC, or any other mainstream outlet; they're not organizations, but rather
individuals. And the way to influence individuals to spread your message is not through scare tactics, but rather through
strength tactics -- or, as Kathy Sierra puts it,
helping your users kick ass.
One way to get strong is to be prepared and aware. If you live in the United States, try this video (or
here if you're a text person).
