Week in Review, October 27, 2007
Important News Item #1 of the Week: Microsoft invests in Facebook. I don't really think this will result in anything particularly interesting on the web, as I don't think MSFT or Facebook is particularly interesting on the web. Although I do think if you take Microsoft's hardware, toss in a few RFID chips, and add Facebook's user database, you'll get some pretty cool stuff. We'll see.
Important News Item #2 of the Week: TechCrunch moves forward with its own data aggregator. The next step, and it will be a huge one, will be for TechCrunch to use this database to establish itself as an intermediary of some sorts. If this were to happen, it would be a great example of how powerful blogs are, and how they stand to redefine markets immensely. TechCrunch, my game is to essentially deliver technology solutions to companies exactly like yours (consumer-facing new media companies). I welcome you to subscribe to my articles, as I will be posting about how companies like yours can redefine markets. Post #1 of the Week: Brad Feld says the enterprise game is where it's at. I think he's right. What's important about this is that we are seeing something that developed outside of the firm go into the the firm; before, the cycle of progress was that innovations would go out, from firms to homes (think of how computers started out in offices, and then became something everyone had at home, and then something everyone has -- at which point it became a tool for self-expression, i.e. a fashion item). Now, though, we're seeing social news sites -- something used by individuals outside of the firm -- go inside the firm. The end consequence of this is a fundamental change in the nature of the firm. It is this change, something that is fundamentally a management change, that will be the next big disruption. Kid Mercury Blog Update: We have ActoCourses! These are bite-sized courses designed to help people learn quickly and easily. Check them out. It's still a work in progress, although any feedback on whether or not they are effective in helping you learn, or how they could be improved, would be much appreciated. Also, while my RSS nightmares are partially solved, I'm not in the clear just yet -- I'm still looking for a robust RSS mashup tool. If you know of one, let me know. And of course, to the right of the front page you'll notice two new links: a list of sheeple and kooks in Internet business as well as a timeline for my game with Jason Calacanis. Discuss, and enjoy. Goal for next Friday: implement virtual currency system. Video Channel of the Week. Check out excerpts from the movie Endgame. I honestly can't think of a more important movie for people to watch.
